On 16th October, Stateside Foods funded and facilitated an employability activity day for a group of 27 students from Westhoughton High School. Following a presentation in the Year 10 assembly, students aged 14 & 15 volunteered to take part in the Launch Pad event, hosted by Young Enterprise – the UK’s leading charity that helps young people to harness their personal and business skills.

During the activity day, students worked on the early stages of launching a new hypothetical business. Through activities such as developing a Company name and logo, bridge manufacturing and making a product advertisement, students used employability skills such as confidence, initiative, organisation and problem solving.  The students then generated and tested the feasibility of their business ideas and were able to build a clearer understanding of business startup, employee roles and the importance of creating brand identity and marketing strategies.

The students gained a certificate that evidences the development of their key employability skills which will contribute towards building their CV when they begin to apply for work.

The Launch Pad activity day also served as an introduction to the start of the Young Enterprise Company Programme which Stateside Foods have funded and will be supporting for the 15/16 academic year. A team of fourteen students have now been selected to form their own business and market a product of their choosing. Through Company Programme, students find out what it’s really like to set up and run a business.

Over the course of the project the students will make all the decisions about their company, from designing their product and raising the initial share capital, through to selling directly to customers and ultimately winding up the company and paying their taxes. All this will take place with the support of Business Advisors from Stateside Foods. Stateside Foods’ contribution to Young Enterprise, will help teachers at Westhoughton High embed practical business skills and careers advice into the curriculum.

The programme culminates at the UK Final which features teams battling it out to be crowned UK Company of the Year and to go on to the European Final. Watch this space to see how our Westhoughton team get on! We would like to thank all the students and teachers that took part in the Launch Pad event, and we wish the Company Programme Team the best of luck with their venture!
